Don’t Be Fooled! Understand What Influences Your Exterior Remodeling Cost

Getting quotes from multiple contractors is an important part of the remodeling process. It’s normal to have small variations in these estimates. However, if one stands out significantly, you’ll want to know which cost factors play into the total estimate. This way you can double check to make sure you are actually getting the best deal on your exterior remodel.

Factors that play into exterior remodeling cost

One of the key factors that plays into a contractor’s estimate on your project is the materials. Did you specify which materials you want to be used? If not, some contractors may use lesser quality materials in order to give you a lower bid. Or maybe the materials you requested have to be shipped from another state or country -- this could increase the cost of your project. If you are aware of these factors, you’ll be more prepared to receive bids from multiple contractors and discern who is giving you a good deal.

Labor Costs

In addition to material costs, a contractor has to factor in the amount of man-hours required for the job. If a certain bid is higher and you know they’re all using the same materials, that contractor may be planning to use more workers for your project than the other contractors. For example, if one contractor plans to have three workers for 20 hours each, that’s a total of 60 man-hours. However, another contractor could estimate needing four workers for the same amount of time, which would total 80 total man-hours. By researching each contractor (reading reviews and asking about their experience), you’ll be able to get a sense of how efficient they are. With some background knowledge, you should be able to assess if they’re giving you a good deal on labor costs.

Contractor bids can also be based on the deadline by which you want to project finished. Generally, a rushed timeline will increase the price of your project.

Site Location

Finally, some contractors may consider the location of your job into their estimate as well. If your home is located outside the normal range for their work area, they may factor in the time and gas costs for workers to get to and from your house.

We hope these details have given you some insight into exterior remodeling costs and what to expect when asking contractors for a bid. If you’re interested in some new exterior siding, contact Peninsula Siding Company for an estimate!
