Even in the beautiful Bay Area, the fall weather can cause damage to your property. Falling leaves, stronger winds and unpredictable rains can wreak havoc on a parked car or your house. Here are four things you should do to protect your siding from inclement weather:

Clean out your gutters.

It's that time of the year again! As the trees their leaves, your gutters fill up. They're also filling with dirt, twigs and the occasional bird's nest. All of the buildup isn't just unsightly, it can cause siding damage.

  • Overflow can lead to water spilling over the edges and potentially flooding parts of your house.
  • That water overflow can also stain your exterior siding.
  • Full gutters become heavy which can cause them to fall off your house.

Make sure your house has the proper clearance.

Did you know your exterior siding shouldn't be directly on the ground? It's important there's space so rainwater can't splash up and old leaves can't rot the bottom of your siding. Go around the outside of your house and remove and leaves or dirt that may have built up between your siding and the ground.

Inspect the exterior.

While you're outside checking the clearance, be on the lookout for any cracks and damage to the panels or planks on your house. The cracks could be the perfect winter home for unwanted insects. You also don't want any preexisting damage before going into the colder months as it could lead to more, permanent damage. Now is really the time to replace your exterior siding if there are any signs of damage.

Landscape for safety.

If you have any shrubs, bushes or trees near your home or driveway, make sure they are pruned, trimmed and healthy. Falling leaves and weak branches can cause a surprising amount of damage to your property and exterior siding.

Even during the mild autumn on the San Mateo Peninsula, it's important to take all the right steps to protecting your siding.
